Codes and Conventions - Mr Phillipson

There are many other Factual TV Programmes other than DocuSoaps and DocuDramas. There are such things as Make over shows, Special Interest Documentaries, Magazine Shows, Chat Shows, Discussion Shows & Review Shows.

Special Interest Documentary:
Special Interest Documentaries are mainly posted online on websites such as Youtube and other streaming websites. Also documentaries such as these are usually made only once as in they are one off documentaries and are not carried on the following week. While these documentaries are one offs, they also appeal to certain target audience which it is aimed at. Therefore these Special Documentaries are very strict on who they want to watch the documentary. As they are aimed at a niche target audience these types of documentaries are not shown on mainstream channels such as BBC1 or ITV1. This is because as mainstream channels they have a wider variety of audience and people may not feel comfortable watching the documentary or feel irritated that something they do not prefer is going on TV.

One S.I.D would be the Munich Air Crash which killed 22 People. This happening on 6 February 1958, A plane leaving the Runway in Munich-Riem Airport crash on the third attempt of taking off on an slush covered runway resulting in 22 Deaths and 21 Survivors.

Another Special Interest Documentary would be a documentary on Gaming. How people have evolved into becoming Pro-Gamers in the Major league Gaming community. Here we see a guy who has been playing games such as Halo & Call of Duty in a competitive level which could potentially earn him a lot of money.

Wesley Taylor - Graphics Designer

Here is a documentary about a man named Wesley Taylor who has become a Graphics Designer. He has lived in Detroit which is one of the "baddest" parts of America as well as the quietest. Wesley Taylor talks us through how he came a Graphic Designer throughout the course of this documentary. He talks about how he observes other people and learns from other people to become the best at what he is. This documentary is really an "One-Off" due to to the nature of the documentary. It's mainly aimed at a certain target audience which are people who are interested in Graphic Design and partially Technology. The documentary here does not feature any archive footage which shows the audience this is all shot in present time. Also it tells the audience to trust what they are watching. This meaning it shows realism on what he does for a living and how he does it. At around 0.46 we see a montage of his daily life as a Graphic Designer and how he works with other collaborations to express his mood and style. By showing a montage the audience/viewer gets an insight of how Wesley works and responds with other people around him. Also from 0:16 we start to hear a voice over of the actual presenter of the show. By having a voice over he is guiding us through the visuals of the documentary and explaining what is happening in the screen as he speaks. Without a voice over the audience will not know what place the documentary is set in or what is going on. The fact that they have implemented this into the documentary shows a portion of professionalism but abides by most codes and conventions of Documentaries such as having Voice Overs, Montages, Presentation of facts. Which brings me onto my next point of Presentation of facts. The way he presents his facts is by using the visuals. At the begging where he talks about facts of Detroit we have corresponding visuals to back up his point. By doing this the flow of the documentary would be constant and there would be no interruptions between when he speaks and what visuals appear on screen. The premise that Wesley shows throughout this documentary is very good. For the viewer he had a strong idea of what he would say and how he would say it. He starts about talking about his life growing up in Detroit and how it has all changed. And then him going onto talking about lego and how that made him has some sort of passion about objects and then onto him becoming his ambition of being a Graphics Designer. The reason why his premise was very good was he structured the whole documentary thoroughly for the audience.

Make over Shows:
Make Over shows usually show a before and after of a person, building ect. It usually includes an aspect of appearance throughout the whole programme. It either compares two people or shows a before and after of a person. This can also be done with a house where the house is a mess and then it is refurbished and shown to the owner of the house. Generally the Make over shows are hosted by people who are experts on what they are doing whether it is make up or house cleaner. Here in Make Over shows it usually focuses on one particular person and not many.

Pimp My Ride is a show where the Presenter Xzibit goes to a person who has asked for their car to be customised due to it's rough shape. Xzibit the presenter has the expertise in customising cars but also his crew are experts in their own area such as interior Design, Paint Jobs ect.

Another show that is considered a make over show would me 60 Minute Make over where the viewers sees a house being transformed in an hour as a surprise for whoever's parents/brother or sister. That show is again run by experts so we know what they are doing to the house and how they actually perform the transformation.

An extreme make over would be a show such as how clean is your house where we see people who literally live like animals with bacteria, fungus, dog hair, dog faeces all over the house. Run by experts in cleaning thy get the owner of the house involved in cleaning the house and getting i back in running order.

As mentioned above the program how clean is your house is run by two experts in the field of cleaning. Most Make Over shows are cliched when they do the same thing over and over again but the individual that they focus on each week is changed. At 0:00 we see a montage for the opening sequence about this filthy house that they are about to go into for a major cleanup. This shows the viewer what will be going on throughout this weeks episode. Straight after the montage we have a voice over starting at 0:18 where the house owner is guiding the audience through how their kitchen is a mess and they just close the door on the house when they go out to forget out the situation. The make over show here shows some aspect of Interviewing the owner of the house sat the beginning of the show at around 0:15 where we have a shot of he talking about the house she is currently living in. The music that we hear throughout the program is trying to illustrate the horror that this woman Julie lives it. For example at 0:00 where the montage starts we hear this horror type instrumental to indicate the shear mess the house actually is in. Editing wise I think this show has a clear meaning where they first show the audience what house they would be cleaning this week, then a quick cut to the owner speaking about the house, then back to the house with the owner's voice as a voice over. All this has been done for aesthetic reasons but also to help the flow of the show itself. It creates a a more vivid meaning to the audience themselves by showing great attention to detail. Along with the interview that we see during the opening sequence of the show we also get a point of view from the owner on how they think the house is. This really gives the audience a clear explanation of what her situation of her life is.

Discussion Shows:
Discussion shows usually involves a group of people who debate about a topic or have a conversation about. The tone of the whole show is usually quite and intense because the topic they are talking about tends to be quite serious. There are no vt's present in this show. As well as that the location does not move from the set. With a multi-camera set up they tend to capture different angles of the audience and guests on the show.

One great example of a Discussion Show would be Alan Davies : As yet untitled. While the mood of the show is more up lifting this portrays itself as a discussion show where they are all around a table discussing topics that Alan himself brings up. In this particular part of the episode we see a topic about UFOs being discussed.

Another great discussion show would be the Graham Norton show where they have an interview with people on the show and have general discussion about topics that Graham is interested in. Here in this part of the episode he talks about Cheryl Cole big tattoo. Again the tone of the show itself is not as serious.

Room 101 would be another great discussion show where we have people (minor celebrities) come in to talk about their hatrids for things and other related topics.

In a way these types of discussion shows are subverting their codes and conventions in a way. Usually we see discussion shows as boring something like Question Time. Where the mood is serious and the audience tend to ask questions which may concern them or everybody around them, but here in Room 101 there is laughter just to make the mood and tone seem a bit more tolerable to watch. At the same time the show abides by its codes and conventions as well because it is in one constant set and we do not see a moment where the placement of the people change or the actual location change. the discussion show doesn't seem to show any aspect of archive footage nor montages where it is a straight 13 minutes of talking. we do however gain a point of view from ricky himself about toddlers in restaurants. at 1:37. At 1:37 we see the presenter pickup a lid to illustrate what the baby sounds are in a restaurant to tell the audience. This gives the audience to take sides of Ricky on toddlers being annoying in restaurants. This discussion show does not have a full lit area its to show some realism but to abide by the name of the show which is called room 101. by having poor lighting it tenses up the mood for the audience. Something like the Jeremy Kyle show is well lit so the audience can capture the facial expressions of the people on the show. The editing of the show again is very basics where we see normal cuts using a multi-camera setup. I think this is deliberately done so the audience who are watching this on TV would feel the realism within the show or they just did the basic editing for budget purposes.

Review Shows:
A review show is what it says on the tin, it reviews products to let the audience gain an understanding of how the product works. The product is often rated out of 5 after being tested as well as that the show frequently reviews products in the same way each episode.

Will it blend is a show where the presenter blends products. Then after the product is blended we are told whether it was blendable or not. He puts products which people use regularly such as mobile phones which he demonstrates here :

Another review show would be QVC which stands for Quality Value & Convenience. The show usually reviews the product and sells them online on their website if the audience are interested in buying them. Also they alow people to call in and ask information about the product for their staisfaction.

Finally we have one of UKs best review show ... The gadget show. This is one of the best channels to see the review of the latest gadgets on the market. These products are tested thoroughly and given a gadget mark out of 5.

Within the first 30 seconds of the show we came into encounter with a First Person View of the presenter while they were holding a camcorder. We see this around 0:36 where she is talking about the types of camcorders which are very clear and other which get blurry. we can see it i hand held because she is stood in front of a mirror and the camera is wobbling around everywhere.  At the start of the whole episode via editing we are told what is coming up on the show. by doing this the audience are not left in suspense on what is going on in the show but they understand what will come up so they don't miss a vital part of the show: this maybe something that they are interested in. Agin this review show uses experts as presenter so they can give their own review on the product. they can also tend to give information related to them which is their own point of view. Not only does the show review products it gains their attention by doing things that people do not try on a regular basis. For example he was building a HUD ( Heads Up Display) for a car at 3:01. The HUD is usually shown in the front mirror in a F16 Fighter jet so people would be interested on how he would get it working in a car. As it is a review show we are shown a review of what he has created at 5:28 where he talks about the clarity of the Heads up display and how it does not disrupt the view of what he sees out of the car window. Throughout the show we see some traditional codes and conventions such as voice over at 5:41 where he is reviewing the HUD that he had created using the components he bought it computer parts shop. te music that is playing through the duration of the show is up beat so the audience are engaged and it also correlates with the tech they are reviewing. for example we would not have an orchestral instrumental playing for a Playstation 4 review. They have to pic out relevant music for what they are reviewing and relevant music for the show itself.

Chat Shows:
Chat shows usually talk about people's everyday lives or issues. The chat shows tend to do follow up shows where they see the lives of people before and after the debate/conflict. Also the set is mainly in a studio of which consists of a live audience.

A very clear cha show would be Jeremy Kyle where a person comes in about their issue with a family member or girlfriend and Jeremy has to try and get to the bottom of the situation and give them a clear answer. For example a guy says he is not the father of the baby but the woman claims she is. Jeremy then has to talk them through the argument and then ends of in showing the DNA test confirming whether he is the father or not.

Another chat show would be the 5 o clock show which replaced the Paul o Gradey show. Here is an entertaining chat show on Channel 4 where we see musical performances and general discussion about topics with celebrities.

A well maintained chat show would be Alan Carr's Chatty Man. This is a comedy chat show which includes celebrities. The aim of the show is to have fun and have topical conversations with celebrities and Alan Carr.

Here we see a major celebrity Will.I.Am on the Chatty Man show. Straight away at 0:59 Alan Carr brings up a topic of Will.I.Am cursing on The Voice by saying the word S@*T. This allows the audience to listen up on anything they have missed about Will.I.Am throughout his career. Also we have a live audience who laugh at Alan Carr's jokes and mockery of Will.I.Am. This gives the viewer at home to see what they actually laugh at in a way. The audience is really a cue for the audience watching on TV to laugh. The editing on the show was precise because at 4:08 where Will.I.Am talks about who he wants to win on The Voice he wanted Jermaine to win and instantly a picture of him popped up on the screen to show the audience at home who he is and how he looks like. We again have a multi camera setup where we shots of him at 5:18 and then shots of Alan and Will.I.Am on the set talking. We rarely see the audience, they are just there to laugh at the jokes and make the flow of the whole show seem more realistic by having a live audience. There are not many interactions with the audience on this episode or rarely is. As this is a chat show we usually end up with an interview. Here a great example of that because literally Alan Carr is interviewing Will.I.Am in an informal way where they are having banter as they talk.

Magazine Show:
A great example of a Magazine show would be the One Show. where we see an interview with a celebrity in a regular studio with two presenters asking hi/her questions regarding their career. Usually these shows are shot live or near to broadcast time so we can get news that is relevant to the time and date.

Another magazine show would be Blue peter which is mainly aimed at children but they show throughout the show, presenter challenges and famous arts and crafts.

One of Uk's most watched Magazine show would be top gear. A famous show which reviews upcoming and brand new cars. Not only do the review and test drive cars they do challenges or "specials" where they go around to different countries to do the challenge.

Straight of the bat we see a montage of what is coming up on the show for the viewers to see at home, also for the live audience who are viewing the show from the crowds point of view. At 5:00 we see Richard road testing the Lamborghini Miura giving statistics about when the car first arrived in the Uk and how it performs. All in as it's his point of view. He is not biased towards the car, when road testing he always give the positives and negatives about the car itself. As this is a magazine show it usually is set in one set which in this case is in London Excel. The studio is very big so they can fit the cars and audience at the same time. We can see at 0:41 after he talks bout the Lamborghini's 40th Anniversary it goes to a pre-recorded segment of Richard Driving the Lamborghini. This part is literally a montage of the Miura in action. Then it goes to Richard actually being inside the car to road test it. Further down the show they have a habit of calling celebrities on the show to race around their track. this is shown at 30:32. this is for the audience's entertainment because without them doing nothing but road testing people will tend to get bored so they mix up the flow by adding a celebrity onto the show who then talks about their career then goes onto the topic of what cars they have owned throughout their lives and what they currently drive. This part of the show usually makes the audience laugh because the celebrity might be a comedian in this case it is. The interviewing the celebrity just eases off the audience in a way away from cars but at the same time relates to it to an extent. Also sometimes in other episodes we can see how the presenters are bais towards other cars. For example if it is a cheap car they would probably mock it due to ts cheap plastic and build quality but if the car was mocked on a previous season and then comes a new version they might re-alliterate their points. They mainly do it for the viewers entertainment but most of the time they provide high quality reviews and facts about the cars.
